Amanda Botterill gives an outstanding service to her community by running Memory Lane Café for people unfortunate enough to have Dementia or Alzheimer’s. The enterprise grew out of a need to care for her own mum who had Dementia and a realisation that help was needed for people suffering from these illnesses and for their carers. 
Amanda is a busy person who has had a successful working life. Yeadon Town Hall played an important role in her life from childhood as the home for her beloved amateur dramatics. 
This is an interesting and informative chat with useful information about two terrible diseases

    Born and raised in Yeadon, Joyce now lives in Provence, France and gives us a fascinating insight into the French people; how the Coronavirus outbreak was handled there and the problems of getting a French passport.

    Joyce Woods is the 91st interviewee for the Back-Chat Collection.

    In a terrible stroke of misfortune Joyce lost her Mum, Dad and husband all within a few weeks of each other. 

    Her dad was Benjamin Eastwood, who you may well remember if you are an Aireborough person as the owner of Ben Eastwood Carpets and a regular flamboyant pantomime dame on the stage at Yeadon Town Hall.  

    Joyce was a maths teacher and taught all over the world including Harrogate, the Emirates and Guernsey. 

    Some views on golf and Brexit round off this lovely chat.

    Shari Gledhill is an award-winning actor, director and writer. Her love of theatre was handed down from her mother, Edna. 

    It’s always good to talk about up-to-date matters as this will be of great interest in years to come so we talked about Russia and Ukraine, coronavirus and its effects on Shari as a nursery school teacher and her husband as a supermarket worker.

    We also cover Brexit and the recent local council elections and our Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the leader of the opposition Sir Kier Starmer. Global warming, university fees and the Royal family are also covered in this informative chat.

    Being bullied as an Aireborough Grammar School pupil obviously left its scars on Shari and there is advice to her 22-year-old self – whether she would have taken any notice or not is another thing entirely.

    Richard Hayes’ life has been full of action with a career in the RAF as an Air Traffic Controller and retirement in Cyprus which is where I caught up with him for this Skype interview.

    Richard has lovely memories of the original Benton Park School in Rawdon the new one was built in the 1960s.

    His father, Thomas, was an engineering inspector at the famous AVRO factory in Yeadon during the Second World War.

    We talk about Route 66 and the Oregon Trail as well as travelling as a passenger on container ships.

    A very nice chat including a couple of things I didn’t know anything about Air Traffic Control and Cyprus.

    We cover a lot of ground in this fascinating interview with Sally. The easy bit is our opening chat about Springer Spaniels but then we move on to the Ukraine invasion by Russia and China’s possible involvement.

    Sally started her career working for English Heritage and then the Southbank University in a senior role where she has been for 33 years.

    Her son, Max, is transgender and is now referred to as she and as a daughter. We talk about this journey which was not always easy for both Max and the family. Transgender sport is covered along with dyslexia and ADHD.

    Sally is one of those people who is very easy to listen to despite a bit of digital feedback when I spoke. 

    She agrees with me that being an only child is actually quite nice!

    Carl May is an ex-Rawdon boy who now lives in Lions Bay, Canada. His father had a shop at the bottom of Canada Road in Rawdon (coincidentally) which was known and loved by many back in the day. 

    Carl’s mother died when he was just 5 years old and his dad, aunties and uncles stepped in to make sure that he had as normal a childhood as possible.

    In 1987 a decision was to be made to move to Cornwall or Canada, Canada won and the emigrating process began. Skiing, running and cold-water swimming feature in Carl’s story. 

    And we were joined by his wife Sue to talk about the equivalent of the NHS in Canada, Justin Trudeau, Coronavirus, Canadian people as well as our Royal Family, Boris Johnson and Joe Biden. It was interesting to hear their thoughts on the American/Canadian relationship and what each country thinks of the other.

    We start this chat with Kelly Chadwick talking about her rather large house which is surrounded on three sides by Yeadon cemetery and the runway for the Leeds Bradford Airport on the fourth.

    Kelly is a determined woman who didn’t let failing all her ‘A’ levels stop her ambition and she went on to become a director of a Harrogate accountancy practice.

    Kelly’s two daughters seem to have inherited their mother’s love of cycling and running – Kelly was the Junior Mountain Bike Champion for the North of England and has mountain biked down the Swiss Alps which was as dangerous as you would imagine.

    Kelly is a single mother of two girls and it’s interesting to hear what that involves – it’s not easy.

    Lynne Saunders lived on Starkey’s Field, Yeadon – Yorkshire terrace houses where there was just one cold tap in the house, an outside toilet down a ginnel shared with the next-door neighbour and a tin bath in front of the fire. She says, “A cold house, but a great place to grow up in”.

    Her dad was George Taylor, projectionist and director of Gem Pictures which was in the Temperance Hall in Yeadon, her mum Elsie was a weaver and a clippie on Sammy Legard’s buses.

    We chat about the Four Gables Maternity hospital back in the day; the coronavirus outbreak (the interview was in April 2020) and the problems of day care for learning disability clients at that time, and PPE.

    Lynne was married over the anvil at Gretna Green and has always been a motorbike enthusiast, having owned a Harley Davidson and now a monster 950cc Yamaha. 

    She tells me an unbelievable story of patients where she worked at Meanwood Hospital being held there for over 50 years because they had a baby under the age of 16 or were picked up as children off the streets.

    This is a good listen, sit back and enjoy the chat.

    Having spoken frankly about his sexuality in the first interview Ben speaks now just as candidly about the journey he and his partner David took when they decided to adopt a child as a same sex couple.

    There are so many things that I didn’t know existed as a part of the adoption procedure. Ben assured me that all the way through the adoption system his homosexuality was not an issue and did not affect the care and consideration they were given. 

    Ben has worked for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service as well as being a Leeds Police Officer and is now employed by the ambulance service while training to be a solicitor.

    Helmut Watson is a clear-thinking man who has well thought-out views on a wide range of subjects. This is an easy listening chat and we cover a variety of subjects. 

    His father Dave, a lovely man, died in the first round of the Coronavirus and his mother, Kikki, who is from Austria suffers from Long Covid. Helmut tells us his views on UK politics; anti-vaxers; the Royal Family; education; Russia and Afghanistan.

    We also chat about how he became a marbles champion; Austrian Christmases; meeting his partner Karen at a tiddlywinks’ championship and staying in an ice hotel.
